To obtain and maintain their accreditation, appraisers must gain continuing education credits to maintain accreditation. These credits can be earned in several ways and are categorized as either:
- Continuing education (CE) for appraising topics. See WAC 458-10-050(7) for examples. OR
- General interest (GI) for related topics, mainly administrative.
Continuing education requirements ensure appraisers have the statutorily required knowledge to:
- Adhere to state rules and law requirements.
- Administer programs uniformly, fairly, and with transparency.
- Conduct work according to the latest industry standards.
- Keep updated with legislative/administrative changes and best practices.
Attend a pre-approved class
Attend classes pre-approved by Department of Licensing (DOL) and/or Department of Revenue (DOR). See the DOL Course search page, DOR Property Tax Training Calendar, and other training sponsors for current class offerings and suggestions. Want something not mentioned? Learn about requesting course pre-approvals.
Attend class sessions within the DOL and/or DOR approval period and no more than two years prior to applying for accreditation or renewal. This is when appraisers need to attend the class for credit hours to be eligible for their application.
Ensure class topics are different every four years. Classes appraisers take for accreditation renewals cannot be the same or have similar content, regardless of sponsor or title (WAC 458-10-050(8)). Some exceptions include:
- Uniform Standards of Appraisal Practice (USPAP) 7-Hour Updates.
- West Puget Sound Chapter IAAO Spring Seminar.
- Real Estate Research Market Forum.
- Appraisal Institute’s Real Estate Conference.
Conduct an advisory appraisal
For Department accreditation only, appraisers may receive credit for time spent on appraisal-related activities completed under the guidance of a supervisor or lead appraiser. To apply, submit an Application for Continuing Education Credits: Advisory Appraisals.
Author and/or present a new and original class
Those who author and/or present an original class, may request credit hours for their work. To apply, at least 10 business days prior to class, submit a Pre-Approval of Continuing Education Credit for Participation Other Than as a Student Form. Credit hours will not be given for past experiences or repeat classes.
Credit hours earned as a class author and/or presenter are separate from the credit hours earned as a student, should the individual attend the class too. For example:
A lead appraiser is registered to attend a mandatory, all-day county training, where she is also expected to present a segment on an emerging property tax topic. Curriculum for the topic did not exist, so over two days, the lead appraiser conducted research and created a PowerPoint presentation and reference guide from scratch. Knowing her efforts may be eligible for accreditation credit, she requested and was awarded 22 continuing education hours—19 for authoring training materials and three for teaching and answering questions during her upcoming presentation. On training day, after the lead appraiser presented her segment, she stayed for the remaining topics. She contributed to all group discussions, completed exercise worksheets, passed the exam, and met attendance requirements. As such, she earned 8 continuing education hours for participating as a student. Through the different roles she played within the same training, the lead appraiser gained a grand total of 30 continuing education hours. |
